Review:
The GSR is getting on (30,000 miles) and in a bid to reduce the mileage and wear on the GSR, I decided that a second bike would reduce the mileage, the wear and tear, the insurance I have, and inject some much needed enthusiasm back in to my motorcycling life.
The MT-01 is a bike I’ve wanted for a long long time (ever since finding out about the MT range, and owning the MT-03) and after seeing a MT-01 for sale locally, and having a chat with my lady, I jumped at the chance to own one.
It’s everything you read about and more. The power from this bike is just fantastic. It’s not a flying machine, a lot of people see the 1700cc tag and think it’s a rocket man. Its not. It’s an insanely torque driven power house that makes you grin from ear to ear, but still keep your licence.
The fit and finish on the MT-01 is second to none, it’s head and shoulders above the GSR, but then again these bikes cost £12k new. Fantastic brakes, fantastic dials, fantastic riding position, fantastic handling, fantastic scope to personalise (settings) and fantastic sound.
Everything about the MT-01 I love, everything. But I must find some cons.
Pros:
- Looks absolutely jaw-droppingly mean.
- Sounds absolutely jaw-droppingly mean.
- Feels absolutely jaw-droppingly mean.
- Power from 1,000 RPM is just mind boggling.
- Fantastic handling
- 1700cc V-Twin
- Instant throttle response
- Smooth throttle response (no GSR jerkiness)
- Fantastic brakes
- Superb fit and finish
- 190 section rear tyre
- Minimal recurring maintenance due to design (i.e. clutch is hydraulic etc)
- Fantastic backup as far as user experience is concerned, on the MT Owners Club forum
Cons
- …
- No fuel gauge.
- No Shift light.
- eh.
- There’s a total of 5 bulbs alone in the front headlight. Could be expensive?
- Possible steering bearing issue.

I’ve owned many bikes in my life. Have owned my Mt01 for 2 yrs now, just love it. Don’t understand why they don’t sell truckloads of these machines.( maybe the pricetag) Agree with you’re pros and cons. Bike had 320km when I bought it, now 18000km. Can’t ride for 5-6 mnths of the year, good thing it would have 40000 if I could ride year round. Later, cheers.

Gordon, I’m seriously considering an MT-01. Had an XJR 1300 before, until that was written off courtesy of a pothole…
Now have a ZZR 600, as a commuter. I don’t drive, so my bike’s my only mode of transport.
Want to get the MT-01 as a fun bike, for the weekend blasts, and a bit of touring, and keep the ZZR as my hack.
Do you still recommend the MT? Or has the love faded in a year?
