The life of a Scotsman

The first day of spring

Today I experienced the first day of spring and I would like to share with you what it was like:

Bliss.

This morning’s ride in was uneventful with exception to there being a biker cop sitting half hidden behind cars and me doing slightly over the speed limit. I nodded as I always do when I see a police biker and he nodded back. Problem solved.

The weather was gorgeous for this time in the morning, with only summer gloves on my hands were far from cold. The sun was beating through the funny haze that was hanging around today and the air was crisp with the smell of fields. I felt good going to work today.

Throughout the day the sun continued to shine, the first time in a long long time. At lunch instead of playing a LAN game as usual, we sat outside and talked about the recession and how it’s just shit and we’ve all came to terms with it. Then, after a short stint in the office, I was off to pickup a model case from Portobello which was uplifting. The weather had done nothing but get better and by the time I headed out for this pickup at 3:30pm the day was at it’s peak. It was the first time in a long time I actually felt content sitting on my bike. After getting back to the office I finished off a project I needed to get done and left the office a wee bit later than usual.

When I got on to Queensferry Rd the sun was starting to disappear behind the trees, but the air was still pleasant and I kept my jacket open a bit to get a warm breeze around. I kept breathing in the fresh air and thinking that this is what it’s all about.

By the time I got to the Forth Road Bridge the sun was low, slinging a deep vivid red across the Forth Harbour. It was a beautiful vision and sent a warm fuzz around my brain. I cracked it in to 6th and settled in for the cruise home…at a very brisk pace.

Note to self: I am needing to take my screen off now that the transition to spring has been reached as it allows too easy an access to higher speeds.

As I passed Dunfermline I was suddenly aware of set of very close headlights coming the other way. The two lights were too close together to be a car, and too far apart to be a motorcycle. As I floated past it, I was stunned to see that after many an hour reading about them, I finally saw someone who actually bought one. They call themselves “Carvers.”

And they look like this:

A motorcycle without the buzz, feel or cool

A motorcycle without the buzz, feel or cool

Amazing.

I then arrived swiftly and parked up in time for tea to be on the go.  The night was then filled with TV watching, in particular the absolutey fantastic BBC Nature’s Great Events, presented to me in stunning BBC HD. We got a FreeSat box for Christmas from Mum and Dad and if you were to remove all the other channels and make the only thing available BBC HD, I would still think it’s the best thing ever. To have a picture on my TV as crisp, clear and jaw droppingly gorgeous as HD for absolutely no money whatsoever is just boggling. But I don’t care. If you don’t have it, then the time is now, even if only for the HD channel.

Anyway, my plug for BBC’s services has ended.

Grand Designs is on and I’m thinking of bed.

Thanks for reading all,

Gordon

  1. Nice to hear the good weather’s finally back in Scotland. We’ve had it great down under since I got my bike in October, and even though it’s technically Autumn, the weather’s still peachy. Dunno if I’d have the balls to ride back home… Props to you, sir.
